MISSION STATEMENT:
The City of Athens encourages community involvement and is committed to providing efficient and effective government which is open and responsive to the needs of the community and works for the benefit of all.
ORGANIZATIONAL GOALS:
City Council - To provide leadership, to set policy and make decisions based upon facts and what is in the best interest of the entire City.
City Employees - To serve the public in an atmosphere of courtesy, friendliness and respect. To provide the highest quality municipal services in an effective and fiscally responsible manner.
Objectives:
♦ To preserve community physical and aesthetic assets.
♦ To cultivate a healthy business climate.
♦ To provide public services as efficiently as possible.
♦ To be attentive and responsive to the concerns of the citizens.

Elections are held the second Saturday in May of each year.
The City of Athens Charter provides for a Council-Manager form of local government. The Mayor and City Council Members are elected from the City at large for terms of two (2) years.
The Athens City Council meets in Regular Session on the second (2nd) and fourth (4th) Monday of each month at 5:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers of the City Hall Annex, 501 North Pinkerton St., Athens, Texas.
The City Council meets in Special Session on the Wednesday preceding the second (2nd) and fourth (4th) Monday of each month at 11:30 a.m. in the Council Chambers of the City Hall Annex, 501 North Pinkerton St., Athens, Texas.
The Rules of Procedure shall be followed when requesting to appear before the City Council.
